Heartworm is a webseries pilot that was created as part of my second year of study at Norwich University of the Arts. On this project I worked as the production design, and as this is a character driven drama I ensured that I centred my research and development to be unique to the two characters but to be complimentary with one another too.

Watch the pilot here:

Final Moodboards

For Michael's character I chose to use the colour red as it is the colour that impacts us the most psychologically. The colour has connotations of anger and passion, two themes that are strong with the nature of this character. I was inspired by the colours used in the work of Francis Bacon and Picasso; for Michael's apartment my main influence came from Tracey Emin's "My Bed".

I wanted to use blue for Amanda as she represents the calmer, tranquil side of the relationship. I wanted to use a more neutral colour palette for Amanda's character to contrast with the more heated palette that is associated with her husband Michael. The colour yellow comes in to bring brightness to this palette, but also as a representation of youth and childhood as the couple's children live with Amanda.

Original Moodboards

For the original moodboards I put together multiple images that I felt were influential for my decisions as the production designer. These references range from artwork, street-style fashion, album art, and film and TV. Although this was an effective way to convey my ideas to the director, I feel that the final moodboards (above) are a clearer and neater way to present my ideas.

Location Colours

Following my character development process I created colour schemes for the three locations that feature in the web-series pilot. The cafe acts as a middle ground for the couple, but also the point of a catalyst within the relationship. I therefore brought in the purples due to the colour's connotation with frustration and remorse, themes that fit perfectly within this integral scene.
