The Garage is a small theatre and studio in Norwich that hosts workshops in dance, theatre and much more for predominantly 4-25 year olds. In the summer they hold a two-week course for under 18s in which they get to perform in the summer production; this year being Sleeping Beauty. For these courses and The Garage to progress and hold classes that are accessible for everyone, which is why a lot of those who worked on the summer production came along as volunteers. I saw the opportunity come up through my uni's employability page and thought it would be a great way to stay creative over summer and pick up more practical experience.
During the 2 weeks I worked in the costume department and assisted with the set. On my first day I was asked to transform an old chest into the chest that would hold the spinning wheel and be used for several other functions in the show.
Throughout my time at the Garage, I essentially became the glue-gun expert of the costume room which meant anything that required a quick mend was passed my way and I was in charge of creating all of the headdresses for the Moors creatures and the Dizzy Fairies.
I also helped with painting the set and helping the kids get ready and doing their make-up for them. Overall it was a great experience that I would highly recommend; it was great to learn more practical skills and have the chance to create all day, and it was amazing to see how the kids progressed and how enthusiastic they all were.
